“Square Dance”
It is time for quilt number two in this Easy Quilt Series. Squares are really simple and seem perhaps, well, square or lame as the young folks say. But There is something intriging about them when the right colors are used. Suddenly, squares become interesting and even elegant.
This quilt pattern, “Square Dance”, is perfect for 3 main colors. The vibrant repeating pattern of 3, makes a sweet movement of dance. So, grab you partner and get ready to do-si-do! We are about to do some square dancn’ in 1, 2, 3!
The Main Attraction: The Squares & Colors
Let’s use my quilt as an example. In the case of this quilt, the three main colored squares are blue.
- White background with small blue circles
- Bright blue background with small designs in white
- Dark blue background with small light blue tear drops
Background Fabric and Mini Accent Squares
The background fabric is a solid light blue. I felt a pattern with all the other patterns would be too chaotic. So, I chose a solid color.
And, as a final touch, the small accent squares have a pattern that contrasts with the round designs in the squares. What is the opposite of round? Lines are the opposite! The small square fabric between the sashing is made of lines. The lines are composed of blue and white stripes.
Whoo! Let’s get our dance on! I just love this quilt pattern. I have to tell you I wasn’t sure about it. I actually thought it might be boring. But, once I finished the quilt, it was anything but boring. Instead, it was so happy and inviting. It made me want to dance.
As a finishing touch, I quilted it in a square grid. Again, I was worried this quilting of squares upon squares would be too much. In stead, it was just right.
Plan You Colors
This week just start thinking about the color scheme you want. The quilt pattern, Square Dance, is based on these guidelines below.
You’ll need:
3 colors for the large squares
1 color for the small squares between the sashing
1 color for the background fabric (shashing)
